About the Position

🏥 Practice Overview
Des Moines Medical Centers are seeking a locum-to-perm Hematologist/Oncologist to provide Medical Hematology/Oncology coverage across both sites. Coverage is primarily outpatient, with some inpatient responsibilities.

📍 Coverage Setting
Coverage is approximately 95% outpatient and 5% inpatient. The provider will cover both MercyOne Des Moines and MercyOne West Des Moines, including inpatient responsibilities at both locations. Telehealth may also be included.

📅 Schedule
The preferred schedule is 2 weeks on/2 weeks off with call. Facility coverage is needed 4 days per week, typically Monday–Thursday or Monday–Friday. Clinic hours are 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., with 6 patient contact hours and 8 clinic hours per day. Procedure/OR days are not required.

🗓 Dates Needed
Coverage is needed for the following blocks: September 14–October 2, October 19–30, and November 16–27, excluding Thanksgiving.

👥 Patient Population & Volume
The practice serves Medicare, Medicaid, commercial, and secondary commercial/Medicare patients. Clinic volume is approximately 10–30 patients per day, with an average daily hospital census of 10–15 patients. Appointment lengths are 40 minutes for consults and 20 minutes for follow-ups.

🩺 Clinical Responsibilities
Responsibilities include patient assessments, new and ongoing treatment plans, therapy changes, ancillary referrals, end-of-life care, chemotherapy management, and pain management. Radiation and surgical oncology management are handled by existing providers with strong referral relationships.

👨‍⚕️ Practice Support
The practice has 1 physician, no APPs, and no APP supervision requirement. Nursing support is 1:1. Medical imaging, lab, and pharmacy services are available.
