Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Physician / Medical Director (MD/DO) to provide clinical leadership and medical oversight for correctional healthcare services within a secure correctional setting in New York State. The Medical Director will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based medical care in compliance with applicable federal and state regulations, correctional healthcare standards, and organizational policies.
This role requires a physician with significant correctional healthcare experience, demonstrated leadership capabilities, and the ability to oversee clinical operations while collaborating with nursing staff, administrative leadership, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide medical direction and clinical oversight for correctional healthcare services.
- Ensure compliance with applicable state correctional standards, federal and state regulations, and HIPAA requirements.
- Develop, review, and approve clinical policies, protocols, standing orders, and treatment guidelines.
- Supervise and provide clinical guidance to Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and other clinical staff.
- Lead quality assurance, performance improvement, utilization review, and risk management initiatives.
- Review complex clinical cases and provide medical consultation to healthcare staff.
- Support and oversee Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT/MOUD) programs, as applicable.
- Ensure accurate clinical documentation and compliance with medical record standards.
- Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and collaborate with correctional and healthcare leadership.
- Maintain on-call availability for clinical consultation and emergency medical guidance.
- Arrange qualified physician coverage during planned absences.
- Promote continuous improvement in patient care, clinical outcomes, and operational efficiency.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution.
- Active, unrestricted New York State Medical License.
- Active DEA Registration.
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in one of the following specialties:
- Family Medicine
- Internal Medicine
- Emergency Medicine
- Correctional Health
- Minimum of five (5) years of correctional healthcare experience, preferably in jail or prison settings.
- Experience serving as a Medical Director or in a clinical leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of correctional healthcare operations, applicable state correctional standards, and HIPAA regulations.
- Experience supervising nursing staff and developing standing orders, clinical protocols, quality assurance programs, and healthcare policies.
- Experience with Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT/MOUD) programs is preferred.
- Ability to successfully complete all required background investigations and security clearance.
Work Schedule
- Minimum of 6 on-site hours per week, spread over at least two (2) separate days.
- Required 24/7 on-call availability.
- Must arrange qualified physician coverage during planned absences.
