About the Position
We are seeking a Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery Nurse Practitioner for an engaging 60-day assignment in New Hampshire, starting Nov 23, 2026. This role involves participating in rotating call on weekends and weekdays (1:4), focusing on comprehensive pre and postoperative care, assisting in cardiothoracic procedures, and managing complex patient cases.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Perform comprehensive preoperative evaluations, including H&Ps, ordering and interpreting diagnostics, obtaining consents, and preparing patients for surgery
- First assist in cardiothoracic procedures including CABG, valve repair and replacement, and other thoracic surgeries
- Perform vein and artery harvesting, assist with hemostasis, wound closure, and chest tube management
- Manage postoperative care in the ICU and step-down units, including daily rounds and treatment planning
- Monitor for postoperative complications and coordinate timely interventions
- Evaluate new consults and collaborate with CT surgeons, cardiologists, intensivists, and nursing staff
- Order and interpret labs, imaging, and other diagnostic studies
- Perform bedside procedures within scope of practice
- Manage drains, wounds, documentation, discharge planning, and patient education
- Participate in call coverage and ensure continuity of care across the surgical service
Additional Information
- Experience with first assisting for CABG procedures, valve repair, and valve replacement surgeries
- Proficiency in endoscopic and open vein harvesting
- Ability to perform chest tube insertion and removal, temporary pacing wire removal
- Competence in central line and arterial line placement (facility dependent)
- Skill in sternal wound management, ICU and step-down postoperative management
- Experience with preoperative and postoperative patient evaluations
- Adeptness in managing common postoperative cardiac surgery complications such as atrial fibrillation, bleeding, hemodynamic changes, and respiratory issues
- EMR System: Cerner
