Schedule |
Monday–Friday, 8 hours/day. No overtime, no call, no consults. |
|
Setting |
Outpatient cancer center / infusion. 6 chairs today, expanding to 12. |
|
Duration |
Long-term locum; physicians here typically stay 1–3 years. Immediate start needed (pending contracting). |
|
Credentialing |
Hawaii “island time”: plan 2.5–3 weeks (vs. 3–4 days mainland) |
- The permanent seat has gone unfilled for 2.5+ years — no candidate willing to relocate to the island — so this is a sustained, recurring locum need with patients currently waiting for care.
- Strong, experienced nursing support on site (several nurses with 20+ years at the clinic). The role is well-supported and stable rather than high-acuity.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage outpatient chemotherapy / infusion treatments.
- Provide consistent physician presence through the middle of patients’ treatment plans — continuity of care matters here.
- Work alongside the established nursing team in a structured outpatient day.
Ideal Candidate — Screening & Fit (read before sourcing)
- Temperament is the make-or-break screen. This is an outpatient infusion setting, not level-one trauma. Past placements who came from high-acuity / trauma backgrounds have struggled. Screen for physicians who are comfortable sitting with patients, listening, and providing a calm, reassuring presence.
- Oncologists are often not motivated by rate — they tend to be loyal to an existing patient panel and reluctant to leave. Prioritize candidates who are between practices, semi-retired, adventure/locale-motivated, or genuinely open to island relocation.
- Confirm willingness to relocate to a remote part of the island and live there for multi-week rotations — set this expectation early to avoid late-stage fallout.
Requirements
- Board-certified / board-eligible Hematology-Oncology (MD/DO).
- Active Hawaii license, or willing to obtain (factor licensing + island-time credentialing into start timeline).
- Clean background; comfortable with outpatient infusion oncology.
