Trauma Surgery Locum Tenens Physician Jobs

A trauma surgeon focuses on both operative and non-operative means of treating traumatic injuries. Many injuries treated by a trauma surgeon are severe, life threatening, penetrating, and blunt force, resulting in operating on critical organs in the abdomen such as the pancreas, spleen, stomach, and colon. Trauma surgeons also work with other specialty surgeons to make sure patients are in stable conditions.

Education and Training

Before becoming a trauma surgeon, one must earn a Bachelor of Science in biology, pre-med, or other scientific related discipline. After completion of a B.S., one must complete four years of medical school to earn a M.D. During these four years of medical school, there must be two years of laboratory work and two or more years of clinical clerkships. After M.D. training, one must then complete three or more years in a general surgery residency. Upon completion, one must take a General Surgery Qualifying Examination, followed by the General Surgery Certifying Examination. Once completing both exams, one must take the Surgical Critical Care (SCC) Certifying Examination to become a board certified trauma surgeon.

Personality of a Trauma Surgeon

If you thrive in a fast paced environment, trauma surgery may be a good fit. Trauma surgeons need to be natural leaders, considering they are in charge of a team of nurses, therapists, x-ray technicians, and other medical staffers. A trauma surgeon must also be confident and be able to collaborate with other medical professionals. Also, it is important to possess compassion and empathy since trauma surgeons treat and console injured, and often confused or depressed patients and their families.

Employment Outlook

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that demand for physicians and surgeons will increase by 18% between 2012 and 2022. The field is expected to see an additional 123,300 new jobs over that decade, according to the BLS. In July 2015, Payscale.com reported a median annual income of $301,774 for trauma surgeons.
